System Approach to Management

Focus: Health and Safety – Prevention of Injury and Ill Health

A system approach is identifying, understanding, and managing integrated and interdependent processes and their risks that contribute to the organization's occupational health and safety management system's effectiveness and performance.

The international standard for occupational health and safety management system is OHSAS 18001 (see Figure 8.1). Organizations can choose to have their company registered to this standard through a certification process by independent accredited bodies (registrars) or

self-declare their management system to the standard, having a third party audit the system. This ensures verification of the management system through the third party's audit. Before a management system goes for registration the organization needs to conduct an internal audit and management review. The internal audit can be done by your own trained employees or a third-party, contracted internal auditor.

An organization can utilize Pilot's Three-Step Process – “Identify, Insure and Improve”™ – for implementing its occupational health and safety management system to the standard (the three steps apply to any management system implementation process, e.g., ISO 14001, ISO 9001) and then review it through the internal audit for each process area.
