CHAPTER 9. Integrated Principles for a Sustainable Business Management System

Looking at business challenges and opportunities for the future is not an easy task. After reviewing the international standard principles for quality and then researching major corporations as to what they were working toward in environment and occupational health and safety, I present a list of key principles for business management to drive business success.

1. Business focus

The principles for business success need to be integrated to provide a management framework for all organizations to position themselves as innovators and leaders in integrating sustainability and long-term value into the management of their business operations for business growth and success.

When there is a like-minded framework followed by all businesses that includes quality, environment, health and safety, and

financials in managing a business, this will not only improve the sustainability of the individual company's business but also contribute to improving global sustainability. Companies will be managing the risks that apply to them and impacting others. They will be analyzing data, creating infrastructure in anticipation of added revenue, and rewarding results that improve business operations. The integrated management system to international standards provides a framework for effective and efficient business process management.

a. Quality – customer satisfaction

Organizations depend on their customers and therefore should understand current and future customer needs, meet customer requirements, and strive to exceed customer expectations.

Customer satisfaction is dependent upon meeting business needs and the agreed-upon level of quality to be achieved to benefit its operations. It may also require added value, improved business function, and performance. The supplier is to deliver products and/or services within the agreed cost plan and time to satisfy the customer requirements. The determination of this “success” requires a “quality” approach to management and an understanding of the level of risks.

b. Environment – prevention of pollution

Top management recognizes the priority of environmental management as an integral part of its business success, social responsibility, and sustainability. It leads by establishing vision, policy, objectives, programs, and practices to ensure its commitment to prevention of pollution and to ensure that environmental performance is integrated in the way they do business, throughout the organization.

c. Occupational health and safety – prevention of injury and ill health

Top management recognizes the priority of occupational health and safety management as an integral part of its business success. It leads by establishing vision, policy, objectives, programs, and practices to ensure its commitment to prevention of injury and ill health by controlling its risks and improving its OH&S performance.

d. Financials

Top management recognizes the priority of remaining focused on its business mission for growth, building a brand, and always managing to the bottom line (cash flow), for performance, productivity, and profits.

2. Leadership

Leaders are engaged and establish unity of purpose and direction for the organization. They create and maintain the internal environment in which people can become fully involved in achieving the organization's commitments and objectives. These objectives are prioritized and directed to the sustainability, innovation, creativity, and recognition of employees for the success of the organization and the management of its quality (customer satisfaction), environment (prevention of pollution), health and safety (prevention ofinjury and ill health), and financial needs (profitability) shaping future systems and contributing to society.

3. Compliance with legal and other requirements

A commitment to comply with applicable legislation, regulations, guidelines, and policies (quality, environment, health and safety, business) is a permanent objective of the organization to ensure adequate systems, practices, and controls are in place.

4. Involvement of people – innovation, participation, consultation, partnerships, and collaboration

People at all levels are the essence of an organization, and their full involvement enables their abilities to be used for the organization's benefit. Seek and engage internal/external advice, assistance, or strategic alliances and social networks where needed. Ensure talent management.

5. Process approach

A desired result is achieved more efficiently when activities and related resources are managed as a process.

a. System approach to management

Identifying, understanding, and managing integrated and interrelated processes and their risks as a system contribute to the organization's effectiveness and efficiency in achieving its objectives.

6. Management of resources

Top management ensures adequate and effective management of our resources – land (natural resources), labor (human resources – labor, training, competence, succession planning, communication/ participation/consultation, specialized skills, organizational infrastructure), documentation, capital (financial resources), and technology (automation).

a. Mutually beneficial supplier relationship

An organization and its suppliers are interdependent, and a mutually beneficial relationship enhances the ability of both to create value.

7. Operational control

Establish, implement, monitor, measure, and maintain with risk management, change management, control of functions, activities, and processes associated with our risks (quality, environment, health and safety, financials).

8. Emergency preparedness

The organization is responsible for ensuring that it is prepared for and can respond to emergency situations and accidents and prevent or mitigate associated adverse environmental impacts and occupational health and safety consequences.

9. Performance evaluation

Monitoring and measurement of risks, plans, practices, and performance indicators form the basis for continual improvement. External unattached assessment, as well as internal, will identify business improvement opportunities and shortcomings and provide unbiased intelligence.

10. Factual approach to decision making and information sharing

Effective decisions are based on the analysis of correct data and information. Information sharing with authenticity and transparency builds trust and is made available to stakeholders.

11. Continual improvement

Continual improvement of the organization's overall performance should be a permanent objective of the organization for business sustainability, growth, and success. Senior management's main leadership tasks are to forecast and assess challenges and opportunities to be a positive force in the company and to society. To support advocacy and collaborative solutions, innovation, automation, and technology for ongoing continual improvement in overall performance, and making a difference.
